Age UK Sheffield is an independent local organisation which supports older people (aged 50 years and over) in Sheffield, particularly those who are vulnerable or isolated. They work to help older people retain their independence and get the most out of life.
The service works with people in their own homes, a variety of group settings around the city, and at Age UK Sheffield’s city centre headquarters. They offer:
Free Information and Advice
Information and advice officers are available on the telephone, Mon to Fri 9am to 4.30pm. T: 0114 250 2850; E: [email protected].
Areas they can provide advice on include: benefits, consumer issues, housing, care, debt and money, legal matters.
They also have a complimentary scams advice service which can be provided in your own home. The sessions cover awareness of the range of scams in operation, how to avoid scams, and what to do if you are the victim of a scam.
If you are struggling to heat your home, then they have a short-term project funded by the Energy Redress Scheme, which could help. They’ll do free energy checks in your home and offer information and advice, as well as helping with energy saving equipment such as energy efficient light bulbs and fit them for free.
Free Independent Living Co-ordination
Independent Living Co-ordination (ILC) service is a three-month package of support in which Age UK Sheffield will help you and your family members to achieve your independence needs – whether that be aids and adaptations for your home, increased benefits where eligible, or connecting you up to local activities and transport. They also offer hospital discharge and stroke services.
Free Cancer Support Service
Age UK Sheffield provide free support if you are living with or beyond cancer, or caring for someone with cancer and need a little extra support. This service is delivered in partnership with Weston Park Charity and Macmillan.
At Home Service
The At Home Service provides a flexible, fully trained and DBS checked personal assistant to help you or a loved one with a variety of day to day tasks. There is a charge for this service.
Dementia Services
Age UK Sheffield provide a range of services for people living with dementia and their family carers. These include:
- The Dementia Wellbeing Centres which provide a full day of activities and support designed to delay the onset of dementia symptoms. It takes place in four sites in Sheffield. They are at Norfolk Park, Botanical Gardens, St Luke’s (Ecclesall Road South), and Hillsborough Park. Places are available throughout the week with times and days varying between the venues. Please be aware, there is a charge for this service.
- Their Dementia Advice service can signpost you to the best source of information to meet your specific needs, including resources and services in your local community which can provide ongoing support. These may include memory cafes, carers’ groups, singing, allotment, chairobics or Sporting Memories groups. T: 0114 250 2875 or E: [email protected]
- There are Rosemary Memory Cafes run by Age UK Sheffield. They are free to attend and have been created as a safe, welcoming and enjoyable place. They are for both people who are experiencing some memory loss, or have a diagnosis of mild to moderate dementia, and their family members, carers and friends who may be feeling a little more isolated than others.
- Young Onset Hub is for people 65 or under & living with, or affected by young onset dementia or memory problems. It’s designed to connect & support people after receiving a diagnosis. They offer a monthly peer-support group and a twice-monthly friends and family support group.
Events and Activities
There are various events and activities throughout the week. These include free “walk and talk” casual social gatherings with refreshments provided for people aged 75 and over. The walks are not expert level and are accessible to a wide range of abilities in Forge Dam and in Hillsborough. They also provide free digital sessions. These are for people wanting to connect online safely, learn more about using their devices, or general digital advice.
