South Yorkshire service for Deaf people with mental health needs operates within specialist mental health services, specifically catering to Deaf patients encountering more severe mental health challenges.
The team collaborates with mental health teams to help in the support and treatment of Deaf patients. They also provide support to both deaf and hearing caregivers in caring for their relatives with mental health issues.
All members of the team are proficient in British sign language (BSL) and possess experience in working with Deaf individuals facing mental health problems, including a clinical nurse specialist in mental health and deafness.
South Yorkshire Service for Deaf People with Mental Health Needs aim to assist you in activities that promote both physical and mental wellbeing. This includes:
- recognising positive aspects in your life and making constructive changes
- engaging in exercise or sports
- maintaining a healthy diet
- building social connections
- encouraging open conversations about your feelings, not just during challenging times
- seeking support when needed
Referrals
This service covers Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield.
Referrals can be made by the GP, sensory impairment team, local mental health teams, and primary care services.
However, patients must undergo assessment or have a care coordinator within a local secondary mental health team.
