Refuge are a UK charity providing specialist support for women and children experiencing domestic violence and other forms of gender based violence. This includes:

  • sexual violence
  • physical abuse
  • emotional abuse, and coercive and controlling behaviour
  • stalking
  • human trafficking and modern-day slavery
  • female genital mutilation (FGM)
  • so-called ‘honour’-based violence
  • forced marriage

Although they mostly work with women, Refuge also support male victims of domestic violence and children affected by domestic abuse.

Refuges

Refuge provides emergency accommodation for women and children through a national network of refuges. Their expert refuge staff, Independent Domestic Violence Advocates (IDVAs) and Community Outreach Workers offer practical advice, and confidential, non-judgmental support to keep women safe and help them rebuild their lives.

To access a refuge, phone their Freephone 24 Hour National Domestic Abuse Helpline.

Helpline

Refuge runs the Freephone 24 Hour National Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0808 2000 247.  You can also use their webchat service if you’d prefer not to speak on the phone which runs Mon to Fri, 3pm – 10pm. Or alternatively send them a message.

They have a separate guide entry for information about their Men’s Advice Line.

Resources

They provide a number of resources on their website, including a guide to recognising abuse, a basic guide to legal options and rights, planning to leave and how to support a loved one experiencing abuse and/or violence. Refuge also provide a Tech Safety website, created with survivors, which offers step by step guidance for securing devices.

To receive support and find out about services in your area, call the Helpline or visit the National Domestic Abuse Helpline website to arrange a safe time to be called back.

If you are in danger phone 999.
