Key Information

- Children and Younger People (under 18)
Sheffield Young Carers (SYC) is a registered charity that provides information, advice and support for children and young people (aged 8-25 years) who care for, or who share the care of someone (usually in their family) who is:
- ill
- disabled
- has mental health problems
- or who is affected by alcohol or substance use.
The service aims to reduce the isolation that young carers can experience and give them access to a range of social, educational and employment opportunities.
Support for young carers
Young carers are supported with:
- one to one support
- counselling
- group activities for various age groups at various venues across the city
- respite events and activities
- support with education, employment and training
- advocacy, case working, signposting and referrals
SYC also work with a number of other organisations, to make sure that additional support is available to young carers.
Please note, in order to get support from Sheffield Young Carers you must make a referral. However, the waiting list is around 6 months to access their range of services.
If a young carer doesn’t want or can’t access their service, they could still apply to their Young Carers Activity Fund for up to £300 to get a break from their caring role. This can be either as an individual or as a group.
Family Project
SYC’s Family Project is for adults being cared-for by a young carer in their family. The aim is to reduce the impact of caring on their child. It includes one-to-one support, advocacy, group training opportunities, and social/peer support sessions.
